Overview

The Judicial Council is accepting applications for two paid summer internship positions as part of the Shapiro Administration of Justice Internship Scholarship Program. Each intern will be assigned to a Judicial Council office and work directly with a mentor, who will provide lead direction on both daily tasks and larger scale projects. Participating offices include:

  •  Research, Analytics, and Data (based in San Francisco) (one intern placement)
  •  Governmental Affairs (based in Sacramento) (one intern placement)

The intern program spans June 15, 2026 to August 7, 2026. Interns must be available for the entire time period. Interns will work 19.5 hours per week in San Francisco for Research, Analytics, and Data (one placement) and Sacramento for Governmental Affairs (one placement). A hybrid schedule, with a combination of in-office days and work from home, may be available. Schedules will be coordinated between the intern and office mentor, and will fall within Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. work hours. In San Francisco, the office is only a 7-minute walk from the Civic Center BART station. In Sacramento, the office is in downtown, walking distance to the State Capitol.

The Judicial Council
The Judicial Council is the policymaking body of the California courts, the largest court system in the nation. Under the leadership of the Chief Justice and in accordance with the California Constitution, the council is responsible for ensuring the consistent, independent, impartial, and accessible administration of justice. The Judicial Council of California carries out the official actions of the council and ensures leadership and excellence in court administration.

By enhancing its role as a leadership, knowledge, and service resource for the judicial branch, the Judicial Council’s staff organization seeks to continue to evolve as one of California’s most dynamic public service entities, focused on improving access to justice for all Californians by innovating and responding to the changing needs of the courts and the public. As a government body charged with improving the statewide administration of justice, the Judicial Council has multiple offices with diverse responsibilities relating to court policy and operations. As employees of the council, every member of staff should view and approach their work as one Judicial Council with a public service mission that is greater than the sum of its parts.
 

Responsibilities

Intern responsibilities will vary dependent on the office assignment. Intern opportunities are available in the following two offices:

1.Research, Analytics, and Data: The intern will focus on the following primary areas:

Responsibilities:

  • Work in trial court workload analysis, data reporting, jury, and data analytics. 
  • Responsible for validating and performing quality checks on data. 
  • Do research, data analysis, data cleaning, and data preparation. 
  • Summarize findings and make recommendations. 
  • Prepare written analyses, including data visualizations.

2. Governmental Affairs: The individual in this position will assist with a variety of projects that may include research, meeting coordination and monitoring legislation.

Responsibilities: 

  • Screen, review, analyze and evaluate legislation affecting the judicial branch of government. 
  • Coordinate programs and meetings. 
  • Conduct policy, statistical, and routine legal research.
  • Draft memoranda and correspondence concerning legislation
  • Track and monitor legislation. 
  • Prepare legislative updates for advisory committees. 
  • Compile, annotate, and index provisions of law and legislative measures. 
  • Communicate with legislative and administrative staff, the legal community, and the public on behalf of the Judicial Council.
  • Compile lists of bills for specific projects. 
     

Pay and Benefits

$28.65 per hour
Up to $130 per month reimbursement for qualifying mass transit costs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Current enrollment in a college or university, preferably in a field of study associated with the assigned functional area.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a 2- or 4 -year college
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbally and in writing)
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • For Research, Analytics, and Data placement: experience using R or Stata to analyze datasets and/or Power BI to create dashboards and data visualizations.
