Overview
The Judicial Council of California is accepting applications for the position of Support Services Supervisor II with the Editing and Graphics unit of the Leadership Support Services office. This role is designed for candidates who bring significant professional editing experience.
The Editing and Graphics Supervisor plans, organizes, and supervises the work of four professional editors and two graphics specialists and is a working supervisor. This position ensures adherence to Judicial Council editorial standards, oversees production schedules, and provides guidance on editing and publishing practices. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert in communications and editorial processes, ensuring quality, compliance, training, and timely delivery of materials for internal and external audiences.
The Judicial Council
The Judicial Council of California is the policy setting body for the state court system and has constitutionally conferred statewide rule-making authority. This authority includes developing, advocating for, and allocating the judicial branch budget.
By enhancing its role as a leadership, knowledge, and service resource for the judicial branch, the Judicial Council’s staff organization seeks to continue to evolve as one of California’s most dynamic public service entities, focused on improving access to justice for all Californians by innovating and responding to the changing needs of the courts and the public. As a government body charged with improving the statewide administration of justice, the Judicial Council has multiple offices with diverse responsibilities relating to court policy and operations. The Judicial Council offers hybrid work arrangements for many positions. The successful candidate will be expected to work in person at the Judicial Council’s San Francisco or Sacramento office at least two days per week, based on their office leader’s direction, and reside in the areas surrounding these locations. To be eligible for Judicial Council employment and participation in the Judicial Council’s Hybrid Work Program, a prospective or current employee’s primary residence/remote work location must be in the State of California and within a 150-mile driving radius of their assigned reporting location.
Responsibilities
- Assign, review, and complete editing tasks for electronic and print materials to ensure compliance with Judicial Council standards.
- Monitor production schedules and coordinate deadlines for multiple projects.
- Provide guidance on style guides, legal citation, and quality assurance.
- Collaborate with internal clients to clarify project objectives and timelines.
- Plan and organize work assignments for four editors and two graphic specialists. Coach staff on best practices for editing and publishing.
- Ensure workload distribution aligns with priorities and deadlines. Employ project management concepts.
- Complete and contribute to the most complex work assignments. Ensure work products meet the highest levels of quality.
- Ensure agencywide adherence to Judicial Council editorial and publishing standards by maintaining the Style and Correspondence Guide and Judicial Council Report Manual.
- Oversee updates to style guides and internal documentation.
- Review and approve complex templates, documents, reports, and presentations.
- Provide specialized review and consideration for work product going out from or to the Chief Justice.
- Track expenditures related to editorial projects and production.
- Approve invoices and monitor vendor contracts for compliance.
- Represent the unit in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate with the Executive Office, library, IT, graphics, and other operational areas for production needs.
- Attend communications meetings to present and stay up-to-date on lead staff business.
- Work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, exercise tact and diplomacy.
- Attend trainings and Judicial Council meetings as required.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES
- Recommends selection of staff;
- Trains staff and proposes internal and external training courses and workshops;
- Provides for career development and planning for staff;
- Approves time off requests;
- Reviews and approves time sheets;
- Evaluates employee performance and conducts performance reviews; and
- Administers discipline as required.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in area(s) of assignment (such as logistics/event planning, mail/print services, accounting, writing/editing, training/education, and/or administrative support services), including one (1) year of previous supervisory experience. Additional directly related experience and/or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
OR
One (1) year as an Associate Analyst, Communications Editor, or other level (B25) class or two (2) years as a Graphics Production Specialist or other level (B24) class or three (3) years as an Administrative Coordinator or other level (B23) class with the Judicial Council or experience performing the duties of a class comparable in the level of responsibility to those listed above for the same number of years in a California superior court or California state-level government entity and a) completion of training courses on topics related to effective supervision within six (6) months of promotion; or b) one (1) year of previous supervisory experience.
OR
Internal candidates in any Judicial Council classification who meet the requirements listed above for external candidates but lack the supervisory experience may qualify with completion of training courses on topics related to effective supervision within six (6) months of promotion.

Pay and Benefits
$7,108 - $10,664 per month
Please note due to statewide fiscal conditions, the posted salary range is subject to a temporary 3% reduction. In exchange for this temporary reduction, judicial branch employees accrue an additional 5 hours of paid personal leave per month through June 30, 2027.
