Glossary

Assets - Assets are documents or media files such as doc, PDF, jpg, gif, etc. that can be used in WCMS Pages and stored and organized in the Asset Manager.

Breadcrumbs - Breadcrumbs show users where they are in the site hierarchy and provide a logical way to return along the path they have traveled.

Callout - A “container” for web content, including links to assets (PDFs, images, etc.).  It is the destination layout chosen for imported content. In RedDot a callout is also referred to as a Content Class.  See Content Class.

Categorical Navigation - In the new design we implemented a category/topic grouping of content over an audience grouping. Categorizing information by topic allows us to group and elevate frequently accessed content in a fashion that users can quickly identify and feel confident when choosing a navigational path, thus improving task performance. Grouping content by audience would scatter content across the site in various locations which can lead to a poor user experience.

CMS  (Case Management System) - While a CMS is often known as a software system that allows decentralized publishing within an organization or in our case enables non-developers to publish to AOC Websites, this term when used by the AOC usually refers to the Case Management System (CMS) used by the courts to manage and track legal case information. To avoid confusion the AOC refers to  the Web ‘Content Management System’ with the acronym, WCSM (see definition for WCMS).

WCMS Page - Callouts, web pages, or WCMS Pages refers to both callouts and Landing Pages; it is not the same as a web page. WCMS Pages are the pieces of web  pages that fit together in specific places, similar to a puzzle, to create a larger whole. This allows for different kinds of Pages to be put together in a variety of ways to create a complete webpage. Most web pages are made up of two or more WCMS Pages.

Content Classes - Consists of different code forms, e.g. HTML, WML or SGML, and placeholders with element properties. They contain the design, layout, administrative information, and specifications for the content that belongs to that piece. Content classes form the basis of every RedDot WCMS Page, but do not contain content of their own.

Content - Refers to elements managed in the content management system and displayed on a page. These elements include text, graphics (.jpg, .png, .gif, .swf), and files (.pdf, .docx, etc.).

Dynamic Anchor Links - Dynamic Anchor Links refer to rows of individual links with link RedDots ( ). Not to be confused with a “List of Links,” where a multi-link RedDot allows you to “add/re-order/remove” a list of links, the Dynamic Anchor will only show one link at the start, but allows for links to be “expanded” within the anchor to create a row of individual links.

Dynamic Content - Is any content entered via the WCMS system or generated from a third-party application, including LiveServer.

External Links - Are links to sites not hosted on the AOC web server; external links will automatically append an external link icon ( ). Links to external sites should open/appear in a new window or tab. If the user clicks on the external link icon (not the link itself) the user is taken to a policy page.

Headline - In presentation, a Headline is the style of text between the horizontal rules.  However, within the RedDot software system, a Headline is the name of the Page in the system that may not necessarily be displayed in content.

Internal Links - Refer to links hosted within the AOC web server.

Jump Links (using anchor tags) - Jump links are links that, when clicked, take the user from one point on the Page to another, i.e. a link at the bottom that will jump to the top. Jump links can make jumps on the same Page, or can jump to a different Page. When using Jump links, the anchor tag is a word or phrase that is marked for the jump link to land.

Keyword - is any name, phrase, or variation that would help a user locate a site or page on the Web through use of a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Users often try keyword search as a shortcut to needed information, rather than clicking through layers of the site. It is good practice to anticipate the keywords a user may associate with products and enter these into the Keywords field of the production database. Keywords should also include words and phrases that represent the subject at a high level.

List of Links (List callout, List element) - List Callouts are callouts that allow you to create a list of links to other Pages. These callouts have been pre-programmed to create a link to the pages created or connected in their lists. List of Links callout is controlled by a single Multi-Link RedDot ( ) that allows you to “add/re-order/remove” links.

Media Element Adapter - The Media Element Adapter is designed for any “List of Links” Callouts. It adapts non-HTML files to link to a “List of Links” that was originally created to attach to only HTML files. It is used to attach any non-HTML file or “media” file (e.g. .docs, .pdfs, .ppts, .xls, .jpgs, .wmvs, etc.) from the Asset Manager.
Metadata- commonly defined as data about data. Broadly, this means information about a page and its content. The primary purpose of metadata is to improve resource discovery through keywords, descriptions, author, etc.

Persistent Global Navigation - Appears on nearly every screen at the top of the page, providing application-wide access to universal content or functions. The “Browse” (left-hand) navigation encourages exploration based on categorical organization and complements global navigation.

Public Site - Refers to the anticipated http://www.courts.ca.gov Website, which will be public-facing.  It does not include potential “partner” sites that may be non-password protected and, technically, publically available.

RedDot Templates - Are the templates created to allow content owners to input and maintain their content on the site.  The HTML templates providing the site visual design were integrated into the RedDot Templates.

Reference Link - Per RedDot help: You can have one link refer to another. Use Link Groups to select the group that contains the desired link. Available links are displayed in the Link List. Find the desired link in the Link List and click on it to add.  (Per Michael, never use a reference link within SmartEdit)

Reference Page - Per RedDot help: WCMS allows you to search for an existing page, and to have a link reference this page. The Page Search dialog opens, letting you search for and select a page. (Be sure to use “Reference Page” when adding links)

Rollovers - When a user hovers over a high-level item, its corresponding sub-categories are displayed below the item. Clicking on a second level item opens up the corresponding page.

Search Engine Spider - Is a program that “crawls” or scans the World Wide Web. As it crawls the Web it extracts information, like Meta tags, and adds these to an index. Search engines can only find information that has been indexed.

SmartEdit - Is the content creation and editing tool within the RedDot WCMS. All content contributors have access to this.

SmartTree - Is the folder structure/site hierarchy tool within the RedDot WCMS. Typically only Web Communications Analysts and Divisional Content Coordinators have access to this.

Static Content - Refers to any content manually programmed into HTML and thereby not controlled or entered via the OpenText (RedDot) web content management system (WCMS) and its templates.

WCMS - Refers to the Web content management system; in particular, the AOC is using the OpenText WCMS (formerly called RedDot).  We distinguish this term from “CMS,” which typically refers to case management system in our business.   Note: To distinguish between a WCMS Page and a webpage, HTML web pages are referred to as “web pages” while a WCMS Page, e.g. callouts or Landing Pages, will be capitalized.

WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Text Editor (Content Element, open text area) - Tools (pronounced “wiz-ee-wig”) are editors that allow you to see what the end result will look like while the document is being edited. The editor generates HTML code for you. The Text editor and the Pages being edited in SmartEdit are also considered to be WYSIWYG.  For information about using the WYSIWYG editor, see.
