JusticeCorps San Diego 2015 Minimum-Time Member (300-Hour) Program Application

This program is open to students enrolled in one of our participating campuses:

  • University of California at San Diego
  • San Diego State University
  • California State University at San Marcos

JusticeCorps members provide 300 hours of service. The program start date is September 19, 2015. Hours will be completed by the end of the student’s academic year (May or June).

Applicants from all three of our partner campuses must submit an online application by 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2015.

Applications submitted by the posted deadline will receive priority consideration. If positions remain open we will continue to accept applications until all spots have been filled. If the deadline has passed, contact Amoreena Urbeck or Deanna Blanchard to determine if applications are still being accepted from a specific campus.

Position Description
The program’s purpose is to provide assistance to individuals, (known as self-represented litigants) who have legal matters pending in court, but are not represented by an attorney. Self-represented litigants face many obstacles in their attempts to resolve important legal matters, including a lack of familiarity with legal terms and mandatory forms and an inability to follow or fully comprehend court proceedings or orders given in court. Inability to resolve legal matters jeopardizes litigants’ ability to secure safe, affordable housing, to overcome barriers to employment, to obtain guardianships, or to avoid domestic violence and elder abuse.

JusticeCorps members will be trained to provide legal information to self-represented litigants to assist them with resolving important legal matters such as those described above. Members will be placed where needed in one of 11 service locations located throughout the County of San Diego. JusticeCorps members assist litigants by helping litigants prepare court paperwork, by making referrals, or through assistance at a legal information workshop. Members will receive training in a variety of areas to support and enhance the member’s service to the public as well as training that will support the member’s individual development.

Once members complete all program requirements, they are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award in the sum of $1,212.44.

Application Process

Before you begin the application process, please note that you cannot save the application once you have started.

There are several short answer questions which may require more time than you have available in one sitting. We strongly recommend that applicants review Sample Questions and prepare responses to the short answer questions in a separate word processing program before proceeding (responses prepared outside this form may be cut and pasted into this application).

Application review will begin the business day following the application deadline. Once all applications have gone through the paper screening process, the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an interview.
