Chief Justice Names Ad Hoc Budget Group

SAN FRANCISCO— Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye today announced the selection of a 10-member ad hoc group of judicial branch leaders who will lead budget negotiations on the proposals included in the Governor’s May Revise.

At the close of an emergency meeting of the Judicial Council yesterday, the Chief Justice commented: “I anticipate naming a small representative group with the flexibility and the ability to move quickly and nimbly in the Capitol at all hours and any part of the week,” she said. “And every member of that group will be tasked with the responsibility of outreach to the particular entity they represent.”

The May Revise included a devastating $544 million reduction to the branch and sweeping proposals for restructuring state funding for the trial courts in fiscal year 2012-13. The size and scope of the proposals made just six weeks before the start of the new fiscal year will require intense discussions over the next several weeks.

In addition to the Chief Justice, who will chair the group, Interim Administrative Director of the Courts Jody Patel, and Director of the AOC’s Office of Governmental Affairs Curt Child, the other members of the group are:

Hon. Marvin R. Baxter, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
Mr. Alan Carlson, Chief Executive Officer, Superior Court of California, County of Orange
Hon. Terry B. Friedman (Ret.), Former Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles
Hon. William R. McGuiness, Administrative Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal, First Appellate District
Hon. David Rosenberg, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Yolo
Hon. David M. Rubin, Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, and President of the California Judges Association
Hon. Kenneth K. So, Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego.
